Aikido

Aikido is a fighting sport which is based on an ancient Japanese system of self-defense. The two competitors wear the same type of clothing as in judo. One wears a red belt and the other a white belt to aid the judges to identify them during the contest. There are different types of competition, Kata, Ninin Dori Tanto Randori and Randori Kyoghi.

Air Racing

Air racing is a race that is flown over a 3 mile (4.8km) circuit consisting of six pylons that the aircraft must fly around. The winner is the pilot that crosses the finishing line first and has not received any penalties. Formula One is the most popular class of air racing, but in the USA there is also, Unlimited, T6 Harvard, Sports Biplane and Formula V classes.

American Football

American Football was evolved at American universities from soccer and rugby. It has developed into America's most popular spectator sport. There are eleven players on each side. They try to score points by kicking goals or getting the ball behind the oppsing team's goal line (similar to ruby football). The most important game of the year is the Super Bowl.

Angling

There are three main kinds of angling - fresh-water angling, (including coarse and fly-fishing), sea angling (including fishing from piers and the shore) and big-game fishing. Sea angling is now the most competitive form of angling, with many sea-angling festivals and competitions being held.

Archery

Archery was developed as an organized sport from the 3rd century AD. The most popular form of archery is termed target archery. Other forms are field archery, shooting at animal figures, and flight shooting, which has the sole object of achieving distance.

Association Football (Soccer)

In Association football two teams of eleven players (plus substitutes) try to score goals by putting the ball into the opposing team's goal. Whichever team scores the most goals wins the game. The Football Association (FA) was founded in England on 26 October 1863.

Athletics

Athletics involves running, jumping and throwing. These are organized into track events - running, and field events - such as high jump, long jump, putting the shot, pole vaulting, discus and javelin throwing. Athletics are a major part of the Olympic games.

Australian Rules Football

Australian Rules Football is a combination of Gaelic football, rugby and soccer. An oval ball is used and there are two teams of eighteen players (plus two substitutes). It is played on a large oval pitch with two sets of goal posts - each set consists of four posts, two center and two outer. The object is to score goals (points) by getting the ball through the center posts or through the outer posts. This is done by kicking or punching the ball (throwing is not allowed).
