Modern Pentathlon

The modern pentathlon, was introduced into the Olympics in 1912, consists of five events - horse riding (an 800m course with 15 fences, fencing using epees, pistol shooting, swimming (300 m freestyle) and finally a 4 km cross-country run. Each event is held on a different day, with scaled points awarded for each activity. The winner is the athlete or team with the highest number of points at the end of the five events.

Moto-Cross

In moto-cross, or scrambling, the competitors race their motorcycles over rough country including steep climbs and drops, sharp turns, sand, mud and water. There are races for solo motorcycles or with sidecars. Races last for a set number of laps of the circuit or for a set time. The winner is the rider who crosses the finishing line first.

Motor Racing (Circuit Racing)

The first motor racing Grand Prix was held in 1949 at Silverstone, England, and was won by the Italian Giuseppe Farina. In 1950 the first World Championships were held, and the Manufacturers Championships started in 1958.

Mountaineering

Mountaineering is usually taken to mean snow and ice-climbing. It requires excellent health and fitness. In addition, a good knowledge of snow, ice, avalanches, glaciers, crevasses, cornices and climbing techniques are required.
